Norbar Torque Tools Inc.:
Pneumatic Wrenches Offer New Gearbox Design & Extended Torque
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Norbar Torque Tools, Inc introduces a new gearbox design to its family of Pneutorque® pneumatic torque wrenches . Models in the new Series are now faster, lighter, smaller and easier to handle than other units of similar capacities.
New torque ranges for the PTM-92 models are 398-1,992 ft. lb. (540-2,700 N.m ) and 516-2,582 ft. lb. (700-3,500 N.m). The larger PTM-92 model is half the weight and 60% faster than the nearest equivalent from Norbar’s traditional range. To follow shortly are the 664-3,319 ft. lb. (900-4,500 N.m) and 885-4,426 ft. lb. (1,200-6,000 N.m) PTM-119 Series Models. Tools of this size are typically used in mining, wind generators and large off-road vehicles, where the health and safety benefits of pneumatic tools over impact wrenches are even more significant.
In testing at a major wind turbine manufacturer on multi-stage tightening of the ‘shrink disc’, for each re-application of the tool, the Pneutorque moved the bolt 30º more than its competitor. Total job completion was 25% faster. Further tests were carried out using both an impact wrench and a Pneutorque tool to tighten 10 truck wheel nuts. Averaged over the 10 bolts, the total vibration measured for the impact wrench, the vector sum, was 18.8m/s², whereas Norbar’s Pneutorque registered only 1.4 m/s² during the same test. While a user of the impact wrench would reach their daily exposure action value (EAV) in just 8 minutes, the Pneutorque operator could perform the same task continuously for over 24 hours without breaching the EAV.
